A Message from our Chairman and CEO

Each founding participant of USMD Inc. has a long, successful history of commitment to the development and management of healthcare facilities and services. We are motivated by the strong belief that the best interests of patients are served when healthcare decisions are made by those most qualified to make them — physicians. By taking action to develop physician partnerships for the creation of state-of-the-art facilities and services, we find ourselves at the vanguard of an important and beneficial trend.

Despite good intentions, the corporate model of healthcare distances physicians from decisions about quality of care, cost and value, leaving them with very little influence over elements essential to patient care such as equipment, supplies and staffing. USMD Inc. addresses this disconnect by shifting management of facilities and services back into the hands of physicians, thus removing bureaucratic obstacles to efficient, effective patient care and facility operations. Our experience with various types of physician-owned facilities has shown that physicians thrive when surrounded by the physical plants, technology and system support they need to practice the kind of medicine they want. Likewise, patients benefit by receiving consistent, high-quality care.

Three major healthcare organizations – USMD Hospital Division, USMD Lithotripsy Division, and USMD Cancer Treatment Center Division – pooled their expertise to form USMD Inc. We apply our combined strengths to the management of physician partnerships across the country, representing hospitals, lithotripsy ventures, and cancer treatment centers. In addition to our current ventures, USMD Inc. plans to open several new facilities in the near future.

Our commitment to the mission of empowering physicians to deliver high-quality, cost-effective healthcare through ownership is expressed in everything we do. It shapes each activity, from identifying opportunities through market research, to designing and building facilities, to assisting physicians with such diverse functions as operations, management, marketing and business development. Both at the corporate and at the facility level, we are structured to maximize efficient use of resources within each of the communities we serve. The end result is greater cooperation among healthcare providers, increased convenience and better long-term results for patients.
